Rye has always been the most important food product for Estonians. Bread meant hard work and lots of effort. The cold-hardy and highly productive Sangaste rye, developed by Fr. G. M. Berg, the owner of the Sangaste castle complex, is the first knowingly developed rye variety that is still being cultivated in the world.
To honour rye, Sangaste Rye Day is celebrated during the first weekend of August. In the courtyard of the Sangaste Castle, you can attend a fair, participate in various workshops, a scythe race, and several competitions. An annual running competition will also be held.
Local performers will perform so you could dance and sing along.
